Why do some seniors choose to shy away from a formal Senior session?
For starters, I did. It just didn’t seem to make sense to me at the time.
Sure, I had my picture taken for the yearbook by a professional, but as far as an on-location session celebrating who I was and what I accomplished?
It didn't happen.
And I regret not letting it happen.
“photography is all about memorializing a special moment in time. There’s no room for debate here. Senior photography goes a step beyond that, seeking to capture that special moment in a very unique time in a young adult’s life.
Unfortunately, something I personally have only committed to physical memory.
Think about that, high school is a once in a lifetime experience, and your senior year is the culmination of all of it.
Looking back, not getting my own senior portraits done is exactly why I chose to specialize in senior photography!
Seniors are under so much pressure to not only succeed, but exceed. To go above and beyond. They receive pressure from their teachers, friends, parents, mentors, coaches, college recruiters, and even Senior Photographers!
I want to touch a little more on this.
The pressure a soon to be senior faces to get their photos taken in some special, over the top, and unique way is often enough to scare them away from start.
The additional pressure by parents, peers, and societal norms compounded by the general apathy of of an angsty 17 year old boy - yours truly - made me lose any desire I had to get a Senior Session done.
I wish it hadn't.
I was incredibly involved in high school. I was in every musical class and club I could dip my feet in. I was passionate about so many things. Many I can't even remember. Yes I have some of those memories, but memories alone unfortunately aren't immortal.
They fade.
Every day I wish I had more to remember those days. The friends have parted ways, the songs we sang are tucked away in the back of a forgotten playlist, and the memories are getting harder and harder to bring back into focus.
Senior Photos are for the parents when they're taken, and for the children as they age.
That's my mission.
I don't ever want to be the photographer that inadvertently prevents one of our children from getting themselves immortalized in print, I don't want to be the reason that they are given the opportunity to forget themselves, and I refuse to be the reason someone doesn't like getting their picture taken.
If your senior is reluctant on getting their portraits done, book a call with me! Let me show them how easy this can be and try to remove the mental block they may have towards getting their Senior Photos done.
