About Me

Personal Life

In my day-to-day life, I work as a Quality Systems Engineer at Tenneco Inc. in Burlington, IA - Better known in Burlington and around the world as Champion Spark Plugs.

When I'm not working there, I enjoy spending time with my Fiancee - Destiny, my Daughter - Adelaide, and man's best friend, my Golden Retriever - Bear.

I also enjoy the occasional hike at Burlington's own Crapo Park.

Guilty pleasures of mine include cooking competitions hosted by Gordon Ramsay, bread making, peanut butter based candies, and Ke$ha.

Hi!

I’m Austin Garant, and thank you for visiting my site.

I am a Senior Portrait Photographer based in Burlington, IA.

What lead me here.

From a young age I have always gravitated towards all forms of fine art. This has manifested itself in many forms throughout my life. Before my journey as a photographer I was a Major in Vocal Music Performance at Monmouth College, and have had extracurricular hobbies such as general woodworking, refinishing, and practicing luthierie (the building and repair of stringed instruments).

Something people don't realize about all of these artistic forms (and many - maybe most- others) is how heavily of a foundation each of them have in science and mathematics. I think at its core, the complexity of the foundations of art is what drew me to all of these different art forms, as you need a truly analytical mind and process in order to master each of these art forms.

Don't believe me?

Music is made up of complementary frequencies determined through Algebra, Physics, and and the subsection of Acoustics.

Woodworking is Geometry, Arithmetic, and Dendrology (Literally the study of wooded plants).

Luthierie is all of the above, plus Calculus and Physics.

Photography is Algebra, Optics and Sociology.

You have to understand each of these - or have at the very least a capacity to - in order to truly progress.

So what drew me to photography?

A love of fine arts and the desire to always learn.
